re-declaration of independents

For over 45 years, FRF has been a beacon of independent culture and creativity—distributing hundreds of titles, supporting bold storytelling, and connecting audiences with films that provoke and inspire. But lately, corporate consolidation and digital disruption have threatened the future of independent media, and some have written off the small distributor as a vestige of the past.

Independent film expands what we can imagine, challenges what we believe we know, and connects us to experiences beyond our own. Since 1979, FRF's mandate has been to keep the indie flame, and that work is needed now more than ever. So, instead of packing up we doubled down—reaffirming our mission and finding new ways to meet it.

The FRF Video Club supports FRF NYC, Inc., a nonprofit organization carrying forward First Run’s legacy of pioneering independent film.

  • FRF Video Club

In a world of algorithms, we offer human connection—films selected with care, designed to be enjoyed, shared, gifted, and discussed. The Video Club is powered by FRF Fellows, film students who work to conceive and release limited collections, archival revivals, and inspired inventions like the Original Filmagram—with more to come. We're also partnering with independent retailers to rebuild video culture and community. Every purchase supports the future of independent media.

  • FRF Fellows Program

Since First Run’s founding, New York City film students have been an integral part of the FRF story, with many going on to work in independent media and some becoming filmmakers themselves. Most famously, Spike Lee worked here as a student while finishing his master's thesis, Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, which FRF distributed. Now, we're building on that legacy by developing the next generation of independent filmmakers and lifetime indie loyalists through our FRF Fellows Program.

  • FRF Productions

Independent distributors have traditionally acquired films that are already completed. This model ensures independence—and it's one that FRF continue to practice—but it also leaves the practical benefits of the studio system to Hollywood, and now, to Silicon Valley. And this is no time to bring a tiny violin to a knife fight! So, that's why FRF Productions is re-imagining a viable model for low-budget independent filmmaking that's driven by autonomy, innovation, and collaboration.

let's build the future of independent film

In 2025, we formed the non-profit FRF NYC, INC to protect the future of independent film as a valued force for democracy, humanity, and justice. We're building viable pathways for independent filmmakers, production, and distribution—connecting audiences with bold storytelling that challenges conventional narratives and keeping independent film accessible, sustainable, and central to cultural dialogue.
